Newlife
Filature Miroglio invests in responsible innovation. As a result of this strategic choice and thanks to 4 years of research, 2 million euro investment in "research and development" and a great deal of coordination, Filature Miroglio launches onto the market the technologically innovative platform Newlife™. Newlife™ is certified through a comprehensive production approach and it offers a wide range of excellent quality, high performance recycled polyester filament yarn, coming 100% from postconsumer bottles sourced, processed into a polymer through a mechanical process, not chemical, and spin into yarn completely in Italy, thanks to an exclusive horizontal partnership agreement.
Newlife™: the uniqueness
The unique nature of the Newlife™ production approach is defined by two fundamental elements:
- The supply chain is not vertical, it has been developed horizontally in a system of certified Italian supply partnerships, that makes it fully traceable.
- The end product – the yarn – is completely derived from recycled post-consumption plastic bottles using a mechanical, not chemical process, certified as 100% Made in Italy along the whole supply chain.
The Newlife™ supply chain
The exclusivity of the technology used in the creation of Newlife™ springs from a partnership approach which can be summarized as follows:
- DEMAP: Italian company whose role is to source selected postconsumer bottles from waste recycling bins located in the north of Italy.
- Dentis: Italian company that collects the selected material from DEMAP and through a mechanical (not chemical) process, converts it into a polymer made entirely of recycled bottles, suitable for Filature Miroglio’s spinning process.
- Filature Miroglio uses all its 30 years experience, technological know-how and research commitment to transform Dentis polymer into a range of ultra high quality and performance recycled polyester yarns – Newlife™ - suitable for a wide variety of applications and with levels of performance and quality at least equal to virgin polyester equivalents, but with considerable resource and cost savings for the environment.
- The entire process is Oekotex certified and has also obtained the Plastica Seconda Vita trademark issued by the Istituto Italiano dei Plastici (I.I.P.)
Newlife™: some technical figures
- Versions available: POY, drawn, texturized, microfibre, hollow filament.
- Counts: from 33 d.tex to 2,000 d.tex.
- Production capacity: 3,000 tons a year with the objective to reach 10,000 tons a year within 2015.
- Uses: fashion, sportswear, underwear, technical clothing, workwear, medical garments, outdoor clothes, furnishings, accident prevention textiles.
- Dyeing: the Newlife™ dyeing cycle and output is exactly the same as standard polyester yarn thanks to Filature Miroglio’s research into and development of the dyeing process. In addition, dyeing the polymer already in the spinning stage avoids wasting water, with 10 litres of water per 1 kg of yarn used in the traditional yarn or fabric dyeing process.
Newlife™: some figures relating to sustainability
- Reduces the amount of plastic sent to landfill.
- Promotes awareness of separate garbage collection.
- Makes the most of waste.
- The mechanical process used to convert the plastic bottles into fabric products does not use chemicals that are harmful to the environment.
- The use of recycled polyester, which requires fewer processing stages, means less energy is utilised during the production process, resulting in a considerable reduction in carbon emissions.
- Dyeing the polymer already in the spinning stage avoids wasting water, with 10 litres of water per 1 kg of yarn used in the traditional yarn or fabric dyeing process.
- The production process is 100% Made in Italy and so it’s therefore 100% traceable.
- The production process is restricted to the northern Italy area, thus reducing the environmental impact of transport.
- Apart from OekoTex certification, the entire production process has also obtained the Plastica Seconda Vita mark, granted by I.I.P. - Istituto Italiano dei Plastici (Italian Plastics Institute), which certifies its post-consumption origin and enables traceability of the entire chain right back to the company that collects the bottles from the separated waste plants.
Newlife™: some figures relating to savings
According to the Waste and Resources Action Programme, for every ton of recycled plastic produced, the following is saved:
- 2.4 tons of plastic material from landfill
- 43,600 litres of water for the production of new virgin material
- 3 tons of carbon caused by incineration
The target set for 2015 relating to the use of recycled PET to produce the full range of polyester yarn would lead – in three years – to a saving of:
- 72,000 tons of plastic material from landfill
- 1,308,000,000 litres of water for the production of new virgin material
- 90,000 tons of carbon caused by incineration
A piece of trivia: you need thirty, one-and-a-half litre bottles to make one kilo of Newlife™ yarn.
